Scary Moments in the Woods

Join our Campfire Discussion this week with you own “true tales of scare survival”! Who doesn’t like a good story? Share your story of a frightening time in the woods; perhaps a close encounter with a dangerous animal? Stories range from walking into a bear’s feeding ground to those close calls with humans, like almost being shot or thinking you had lost your loved one in bear country.

Let’s share some intriguing stories around the campfire just like in the woods. Keep adding more logs to the fire and post your scary story in the woods/desert/boat/you-name-it here.

This happened to a family at Koomer Ridge Campground at the Red River Gorge in KY last year.  We heard a crashing sound that night just about dark…next we heard faint screams…we went toward the sound and others campers were gathering to help.  A truck camper with a slide in camper with a Grandfather, his daughter and her 3 children a 16 year old son and a 13 & 6 year old girls were in the process of jumping up into the bed that over over the roof of the truck…when the truck jumped out of gear and rolled down the campsite drive across the loop road and down the embankment toward the Cliff Side trail and a 200 foot drop.  The camper was pulled out of the truck bed and tumbled down the hill.  Everyone except the grandfather were thrown out…he was pinned in.  The truck  was stopped by a tree that had fallen down in the woods. Campers were making a human chain to get the family up to safety. A nurse was camping down in the next loop a was tending to family…Everyone was out but had to wait on EMT’s to get the Grandfather out on a litter and up the hill…he was flown to hospital with broken ribs..by chopper…13 year old had a broken arm and was taken to hospital with her family by a camper.  They were a very lucky family.  They were not sure what caused it to happen…but the truck was not chocked and they think that the motion inside the truck caused it to jump out of gear.not sure about the brake.

I can tell you that walking from a bear stand back to camp in the dark with no head light is scary and a great way to learn the “no bear” song. That was the longest walk of my life.

Luckily nothing terrible has happened to me besides getting lost for hours as the sun gradually started to come down. My friend and I were jogging in a large wooded park (covering a good few acres) in southeast Michigan that we had never been to before. The trail was partially paved but numerous paths zigzagged throughout the park. There were no markers or landmarks in that park, just trails for jogging.
After we had our fill of jogging we headed back in the direction we “thought” was our original starting point. An hour later we had made it nowhere. Another half hour in another direction and still nothing looked familiar. We were young and didn’t think to look to the direction of the setting sun for help. Finally exhausted after two lost hours we came to a fence that met a road we were familiar with. We climbed out of an entrance totally on the opposite side of where we started and followed to road back to our car.
It was definitely scary for a few moments. As a young, inexperienced girl with absolutely no supplies, no food, no cell phone, nothing warmer than my jogging shorts and shirt and no sense of direction I thought we’d never make it out!
