Hunter Education Classes Coming to Many Western Montana Communities

Hunter education courses are set to begin soon in many communities around western Montana. Students can register online now at fwp.mt.gov. 

Anaconda: Class begins on Tuesday, Aug. 21 from 6-9 p.m.  A parent or legal guardian must accompany the student to the beginning of class on the first evening.  The course continues Wednesday through Friday, Aug. 22-24 from 6:30-9 p.m. each evening and culminates with a field course on Saturday, Aug. 25 from 8a.m. until noon.  All classes are held at the Anaconda VFW Hall (3rd and Birch Street).

Clinton: Classes are set for Monday, Aug. 20 through Friday, Aug. 24 from 6-8:30 p.m. each evening at the Clinton LDS Church (20000 Hwy 10 E).  A parent or legal guardian must accompany student to the first half hour of the class on Aug. 20.

Darby: In Darby, an orientation night is set for Monday, Aug. 20 from 6-7p.m., and all students and their parents must attend. Classes will be held Monday, Aug. 27 through Friday, Aug. 31 from 6-9 p.m. each evening. Orientation and classes are held at the Darby School (209 School Drive).

Frenchtown: The program kicks off with a mandatory orientation session for students and their parent or legal guardian on Monday, Aug. 27 from 7-8 p.m. at the Frenchtown Fire Hall (16873 Marion Street). Classes will be held at the fire hall on Monday, Sept. 24, Tuesday, Sept. 25, Wednesday, Sept. 26, and Monday, Oct. 1 from 6-9 p.m. each evening with a morning field course on Saturday, Sept. 29.  Students will also be expected to complete some work independently at home.

Missoula: Students can elect to take a class on Monday and Wednesday evenings, Sept. 10-Oct. 1, or Tuesday and Thursday evenings, Sept. 11-Oct. 2.  All classes are from 7-9:30 p.m. at Big Sky High School. A field course is planned for Saturday, Sept 29. Students can register online now and then stop by the Missoula FWP office (3201 Spurgin Road) to pick up class materials.

Other:  Lone Rock School (between Stevensville and Florence) and Victor  have also confirmed that they will also hold classes in September but have not yet released their schedules.  Schedules for these and additional western Montana fall classes will be released later this month and can be viewed online at fwp.mt.gov.

To register: Students interested in any of these classes should register online at fwp.mt.gov.  Choose the “Hunter Education” link on the home page.  Or, if you need assistance with registration, please call the FWP Missoula office at 406-542-5500.

All hunter education classes are free, and a student must be at least 11 years old to receive certification.  Any person born after January 1, 1985 must present a Hunter Education Certificate in order to purchase a hunting license in Montana.  And prospective hunters must be 12, or turning 12 by Jan. 16, 2013, to hunt during the fall season.
