Emergency Drawdown to Occur at New Hampshire’s Thorndike Pond

Thorndike Pond in Jaffrey, N.H., (Cheshire County) will be closed to all fishing from September 3 through November 30, 2013, during a water level drawdown necessary for repair of the Thorndike Pond Dam. This emergency closure is in place to protect fish that may be isolated in small pockets of water and would be highly vulnerable while the lake is drawn down for these repairs.

Beginning on August 15, 2013, the public is advised that water levels in Thorndike Pond will begin to be gradually drawn down between 9 and 18 inches by the end of the month. The public boat ramp is shallow under the best of conditions and will be more difficult to use by Labor Day following this initial drawdown. After Labor Day, officials will continue dropping the pond level to approximately seven feet below normal, so that work on the dam can be completed before the arrival of freezing temperatures. Construction is expected to conclude by November 15.
As mentioned above, Thorndike Pond will be closed to all fishing from September 3 through November 30. Following completion of the work and inspection of the repairs, the pond will refill at a rate dependent on rainfall.
