Team Australia Leads MXoN Qualifying, While U.S. Sits in Second

The U.S. team’s  qualifying races today at the Motocross of Nations in Teutschenthal, Germany, went well. With moto finishes of 2,4,2, Ryan Dungey, Eli Tomac and Justin Barcia sit in second place in the team standings going into tomorrow’s final motos.

The qualifying motos determine the gate pick position for the teams in Sunday’s final three motos, which means the U.S. team will have second and 21st picks. (Each moto has two of the three riders competing in it.) Topping the results was Team Australia, with Belgium third and defending champs Germany in fourth. Great Britain rounded out the top five.

Race one (MX1) saw Dungey start just behind Australia’s Bret Metcalfe, whom he followed to the line in a relatively uneventful second-place finish. Race two (MX2) ended up quite well for Eli Tomac, as his 20th place start didn’t prevent him from running down all but three of the other racers, including his nemesis Ken Roczen of Team Germany who ran away for the win. Race three (Open) was the final race of the day, and a solid start by Justin Barcia allowed him to run a safe and consistent second place for the entire 20 minutes plus two laps.
