‘Duck Dynasty’s’ Phil Robertson Misses Barbara Walters Interview for Duck Season

As the patriarch of A&E’s Duck Dynasty and founder of the popular Duck Commander brand, Phil Robertson has many demands on his time. Robertson was expected to appear for an interview with veteran reporter Barbara Walters in her Most Fascinating People of the Year television special, but instead had to cancel because the taping interfered with duck season. According to the Christian Post, Walters remarked that “I have never been superseded by a duck before.”

The cancellation comes as little surprise to those familiar with the Robertsons, who have a passion for hunting that borders on obsession. Reportedly, Phil Robertson once turned down a recruiter with the Washington Redskins because football conflicted with his hunting. Robertson previously attended Louisiana Tech University on a football scholarship, later graduating with a master’s degree in education.

“Oh yes. Between, uh, November and January, I told him I didn’t ever plan to die then, because he may not be at my funeral,” joked Robertson’s wife Marsha, better known to her family and fans as Miss Kay.

Instead of going to the taping, Phil and his son Jase Robertson planned on spending three days in a duck blind. Alan Robertson, one of Phil’s four sons, wrote in an email to The Blaze that the family meant no disrespect to Walters. It was simply that duck season was always a high priority for the Robertson clan.

“When it comes to Dad and Jase, ducks trump just about anything from late November to late January, it’s just the way they roll!” Alan Robertson wrote.

Walter’s television special will air Wednesday on ABC and feature other notable figures such as Pope Francis and record swimmer Diana Nyad, who became the first person to swim the distance between Florida and Cuba without the aid of a shark tank. Fox News reported that Miss Kay will appear in her husband’s stead, along with her daughter-in-law Jessica Robertson.
