Video: Alaska Man Trains Wolverine for Winter Rescue

Imagine you’ve been buried in an avalanche. Of all the things that you want digging you out of the snow, a ravenous wolverine probably wouldn’t make the list. However, it just happens that wolverines are especially good at finding people—or frozen animal carcasses—buried in the snow.

“That’s what wolverines do,” said Stevel Kroschel, who runs the Kroschel Wildlife Center in Haines, Alaska.

After working with wolverines for more than 27 years, it seems that Kroschel has even managed to teach the animals some new tricks. While rescuing trapped humans may not come naturally to these predators, you can see below how a wolverine can effectively dig out and even retrieve a person covered by an avalanche.
