Graphic Video: YouTuber Severs Leg after Shooting Lawnmower with Tannerite

According to the Walton County Sheriff’s Office in Georgia, a 32-year-old man was involved in a horrific accident earlier this month while recordingĀ a video for YouTube. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the man had filled an old lawnmower with about three pounds of Tannerite, a popular binary explosive for target shooters, and was shooting at it from just a range of about 25 yards. When the explosive within the lawnmower detonated, the man’s leg was severed just below the knee.

“Yes, it is legal and no, we can’t make people stop doing it. But why, folks, just why?” wrote the Sheriff’s Office on Facebook.

“The dangers of tannerite were more than words Saturday afternoon for a 32 year old resident of eastern Walton county. He was dangerously close to the object containing the tannerite when the final gun shot round caused it to explode sending a piece of shrapnel through his leg severing it below the knee. Yes, completely taking his leg.”

Friends of the victim were able to help stabilize his injuries and waited with him until he was airlifted to a nearby hospital. Seeing how close they were to him at the time of the explosion, they could have been easily injured as well.

The Sheriff’s Office says it receives occasional complaints about the usage of Tannerite, and warns residents to use it safely.

“Please adhere to the warnings and use this dangerous material with caution or maybe consider other less dangerous hobbies. It’s just not worth it for a loud boom!”

The following video is graphic and shows the exact second when the lawnmower explodes, but does not depict the extent of the injuries. Please be advised.
