If you love catching numbers of big fish, one destination that should be near the top of your bucket list is the Red River in southern Manitoba.

Specifically, you should contact longtime guide Donovan Pearase from Blackwater Cats Outfitter. When it comes to finding and catching massive channel catfish, Donovan is one of the best. And while he’s seen just about everything on the Red River, on May 15, 2016, he couldn’t believe his eyes.

“After almost 30 years of catfish guiding, I may have seen 15,000 to 20,000 cats, and not one that looked anything like this,” Pearase said. “It’s truly a once-in-a-lifetime catch. Even though one of my clients caught it, I’m calling it my Great White Whale!”

While channel cats in the Red River grow larger than this albino specimen, the 34-inch fish is still large enough for entry into Manitoba’s Master Angler Awards Program.

“The cats are biting good right now,” Pearase continued. “The water is low with very little debris, the docks are in and the weather looks good. It should be a great spring catfishing season. I am taking bookings for the rest of summer, but the next 3 weeks will be awesome, so don’t miss out!”
