Crappie USA Tournament Released Results for 2014 Lake of the Ozarks Competition

This past Saturday April 5th Crappie USA held a qualifying event on Lake of the Ozarks at Osage Beach, Missouri. Anglers from different states were competing for not only cash and prizes, but a chance to advance to the prestigious Cabela’s Crappie USA Classic. This year’s classic will be held October 16th-18th on Lake Cumberland at Somerset, Kentucky.

“The Ozark Teams displayed a great example of how our members support our national sponsors with the first place team winning both Talon and Ranger Cup bonuses”, said CUSA CEO Darrell VanVactor. “Our available contingency bonuses available are over $2,000 at each event”, added VanVactor.

Semi-Pro Division Results

Taking first place was the team of Tony Edger of Versailles, Missouri and Travis Lepley of Newton, Iowa weighing in 9.86 pounds and earning $1,000.00. Tony and Travis also earned an additional $175.00 for big fish of the event with a 2.04 pound crappie. In addition the team won the Ranger Cup award receiving $500.00 and an additional $500.00 for winning the Talon bonus award. The team was fishing the Osage Arm of the lake near mile marker 60 slow trolling live bait in 12-14 feet of water.

Second place went to the team of Troy Wiethop of Montreal, Missouri and Erie Weithop of Macks Creek, Missouri with 9.49 pounds and earning $600.00. Troy and Erie shot docks in 30 feet of water catching their fish 2 feet deep on black and chartreuse jigs. The team managed to catch over 30 fish for the day. Teams may catch whatever the legal amount is for that body of water, but may only weigh in their top 7 fish for the day.

In third place was the team of Chad Maupin of Marshall, Missouri and Barry Marrow of Strigler, Oklahoma weighing in 9.41 pounds and earning $400.00. Chad and Barry were spider rigging minnows near the middle of the lake in 5-10 feet of water. The team commented that, their fish hit better late in the day. The team caught over 70 fish for the day including a 1.94 pound crappie which put them in a tie for second biggest fish of the event earning an additional $37.50.

The Kansas City, Missouri team of Chad and Amie Wreath took fourth place and tied for second biggest fish of the event in the Semi-Pro Division. The teams crappie weighed 1.94 pound and earned $37.50.

Amateur Division Results

First place in the amateur division went to the team of Justin Neuman of Crocker, Missouri and Daniel Pemberton of Iberia, Missouri weighing in 8.23 pounds and earning $500.00. Justin and Daniel were shooting docks at the 1 mile marker early in the day and pitching Lake Fork jigs under bobbers later in the day using a variety of colors to catch over 100 fish for the day.

Second place went to the Hillsboro, Missouri team of Kevin Jones Jr. and Kevin Jones III with a weight of 7.85 pounds and earning $300.00. The Jones team were spider rigging watermelon colored Muddy Water jigs in 10 feet of water to catch over 30 fish for the day.

Taking third place was the team of Bob King of Manchester, Missouri and Tom Plogsted of Rocky Mountain, Missouri with a weight of 7.27 pounds and earning $200.00. Bob and Tom were fishing the main channel along the north shore, casting orange/chartreuse tubes under bobbers in 13 feet of water to catch over 60 fish for the day.

Crappie USA Free Kids Fishing Rodeo

It’s a family affair at the Ozarks!

In conjunction with the tournament Crappie USA held their Kids Rodeo on Saturday morning with several local children attending the event. All the participants signed up for a chance to win one of 6-$1,000.00 scholarships to be drawn for at the Cabela’s Crappie USA Classic.

Crappie USA and our anglers have contributed nearly $322,000.00 to the “Crappie Kids” Scholarships since 1997. We are very proud to be a part of the education process for the youngsters who participate in our tournaments as adult/youth teams and those who fish in the Crappie USA “Kids Fishing Rodeos.”

Stats for the Tournament:

Weather: Heavy storms with rain, 35 MPH winds and a few tornado’s ripped through the area on Thursday and Friday deterred many anglers from fishing the event on Saturday when skies cleared and winds dropped to 5 to 10 MPH.

Water: Water temperatures were in the mid 40’s with water level 5 feet below normal pool.
