New Concept Nissin i40 Flash Is Pocket-Sized, Weighs Less than 8 Ounces

Nissin, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of electronic flash units for half a century, is introducing a new concept flash, the compact Nissin i40, a high performance, dial operation flash. Pocket sized, it is under 3-1/2” high and weighs less than 8 ounces, and features a video light function with 9 steps of output level adjustment.

The i40 will be introduced in the MINOX USA booth #1719 at the WPPI Expo in Las Vegas, March 3-5. Other Nissin flashes will be demonstrated by noted photographer David Guy Maynard, who will conduct daily live sessions of location portrait shooting techniques.

A simple operation panel has two selector dials to operate the flash:

function and power dials. The function dial shows the mode you are in; the power indicator lets you adjust the power based on the mode in use. So easy to operate, even beginners can quickly get started.

With its extremely small size, the Nissin i40 is especially suitable for traveling, as well as for family and indoor/outdoor shooting. Even though it is small, the i40 provides the features you expect in a full-size flash. Professional functions include: Wireless TTL mode; HSS up to 1/8,000 of a second shutter sync speed; flash output of GN40 at 105mm. In addition, it comes with two optical slave modes to control flexible wireless flash combinations.

Other features include a zoom range that auto-adjusts from 24mm to 105mm. The flash comes equipped with a built-in diffuser that gives a 16mm lens coverage. A soft box is included for softening light output and reducing the shadows.

The flash head rotates horizontally 180°to right and left and tilts up 90°which is suitable for close up photography. This makes bounce shooting more effective, with more angles that can be used.

Despite its compact size, it is powered by four AA batteries, which means the i40 reduces both the frequency of changing the batteries and the recycling time. Its durable metal hotshoe design has a quick-release button for fast and easy attachment.

The Nissin i40 will support Canon E-TTL/ E-TTL II, Nikon i-TTL, Sony ADI/ P-TTL and Four Thirds. Canon and Nikon will be available in April; Sony and FT, in June. MSRP: $269
