Oregon Youth Hunters: Apply by March 31 to Win Guided Turkey Hunt

Hunters ages 17 and under have the chance to win one of 10 guided turkey hunts on a private ranch in Jackson County this spring 2013 season.

Applications for the raffle are available online or at the ODFW’s Central Point office, 1495 East Gregory Road.

Applications can be submitted by mail, fax, or in person at the Central Point office, or by email to Vince Oredson. They must be received at the Central Point office by March 31 at 5 p.m.

There is no cost to apply but winners will need to purchase a license and turkey tag to hunt (juvenile hunting licenses cost $14.50 and juvenile turkey tags cost $10.50). Winners will be notified on April 1 and will need to contact C2 Ranch to arrange a time to hunt during the spring turkey season (April 13-May 31, 2013). A parent or other family member may accompany the youth on the hunt.

Youth ages 9-13 who do not have hunter education certification yet may apply and hunt under the Mentored Youth Hunter Program during the general spring turkey season (April 15-May 31). But only those certified in hunter education may hunt the youth-only season (April 13-14).

Southern Oregon boasts the best turkey hunting in Oregon and C2 Ranch has ideal habitat for turkeys. “The ranch has a lot of oak savannah and brushy areas, which makes for good wild turkey habitat,” said ODFW wildlife biologist Vince Oredson.

The hunts are made possible by a $24,000 Access and Habitat Program grant awarded to the C2 Ranch. The ranch has made habitat improvements for big game and other wildlife species. In return, the ranch owners provided 28 guided youth deer hunts and six adult archery deer hunts last fall, and will offer 10 youth turkey hunts this spring. The same hunts will be offered in fall 2013 and spring 2014.

The A and H Program funds projects that provide hunter access and/or improve wildlife habitat on private land in Oregon. The A and H Program is funded primarily by a $4 surcharge on hunting licenses and revenue from the sale of big game auction tags and raffle tickets.
