Rare Footage of Coyote Scaring Off a Mountain Lion Captured by Hiker

The Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park in southern California went through a series of closings and re-openings after a 2-year-old mother cougar and her cub were spotted near a popular hiking trail on July 7. Since then, the Department of Game and Fish has captured the animal, but an unnamed hiker managed to get this footage of an encounter between the cougar (or mountain lion) and a coyote before its capture. In the video, the coyote appears to be trying to scare the cougar off with its high-pitched yelp. Residents were on alert since this park was the location of a fatal cougar attack in 2004.

The mountain lion didn’t seem too put off by the coyote other than he ruined the mountain lions hunting that day.

What a trip to see that first off and then be able to capture it on film.
