Cabela’s King Kat Tournament Results for the Ohio River at Metropolis, IL

This past Saturday July 26, 2014 the Cabela’s King Kat Tournament Trail hit the waters of the mighty Ohio River at Metropolis, Illinois. In the event over 80 of the top anglers from 12 different states were competing not only for the cash and prizes, but the opportunity to qualify for the 2014 Cabela’s King Kat East and West Championship. This year’s West Championship will be held September 19 & 20, 2014 on the Mississippi and Rock Rivers at Quad Cities, Iowa. The East Championship will be held October 3 & 4, 2014 on Lake Wateree at Camden, South Carolina. Be sure to check out our website at: www.kingkatusa.com. Results for the Top 5 Teams

Taking first place was the well known Paragould, Arkansas team of Jason and Daryl Masingale weighing in 139.12 pounds including big fish of the event with a 71.38 pound bluecat with the team earning $3,000.00 plus $880.00 for big fish of the event. Jason and Daryl started off around the Paducah area early in the morning catching the Big Fish at 8:30a.m. then moving to the Metropolis area for the remainder of the day, targeting wood and structure early and flats later in day. The team was fishing in around 35-40 feet of water using Asian Carp and skipjack to land 8 fish for the day.

In second place was Jon Warden of Festus, Missouri and Jeff Dodd of Trenton, Tennessee with a weight of 114.98 and earning $1,400.00. Joe and Jeff were fishing the Paducah area also targeting structure early on and then moving to flats later in the day. The team   fished in 30-40 feet of water catching big fish early in the morning using skip jack to catch 6 fish total for the day.

Third place went to nationally known Corinth, Mississippi team of Phil King and Tim Haynie with 111.78 pounds and earning $600.00. Phil and Tim fished at the Smithland Dam and the river channel several miles downstream. The team anchored in 35-45 feet of water using skip jack and caught 15 fish weighing a little over 200lbs. Team is sponsored by Cabela’s, Rippin Lips and Mercury Marine, which are all well known Cabela’s King Kat sponsors. Tim Haynie landed the  teams big fish of the event when Phil King left the rods at the back of the boat and went up front to get some Oreos. Yes, the cookie, Oreos. Tim Haynie said he will start bringing Oreos to every tournament now!

The Norris City, Illinois team of Scott Webb and Dale Kerns took fourth place with a weight of 107.02 pounds and earning $500.00. Scott and Dale were fishing the Olmsted Dam drifting  the River Channel in 30-60 feet of water using Skip Jack for bait.

Fifth place went to the Bowling Green, Kentucky team of Rob Benningfield and Nathan Helm with a weight of 104.14 pounds and earning $350.00. Rob and Nathan were fishing 10-12 miles upriver from Metropolis looking for structure and wood piles in around 30-45 feet of water. The team was using skip jack catching a total of 12 for the day.

Cabela’s King Kat Free Kids Fishing Rodeo

In conjunction with the tournament Cabela’s King Kat held their Kids Rodeo on Saturday morning with several local children attending the event. All the participants signed up for a chance to win one of 6-$1,000.00 scholarships to be drawn for at the Cabela’s Crappie USA Classic this fall.

Cabela’s King Kat, Crappie USA and our anglers have contributed nearly $322,000.00 to the “Outdoor Kids” Scholarships since 1997. We are very proud to be a part of the education process for the youngsters who participate in our tournaments as adult/youth teams and those who fish in the Cabela’s King Kat, “Kids Fishing Rodeos”.
