As a big fan of all the outdoor cooking products from Camp Chef, I was excited when asked to review one of their new products for this season: the Outdoor Big Screen 144. There are a number of great applications for this type of large-format outdoor viewing, so I was ready, willing, and able to schedule the review. We just had to schedule it in Savannah, Georgia where the weather would cooperate for Outdoor Movie Night.
The Camp Chef Outdoor Big Screen 144 was a huge hit.
“Set up and tear down was really easy,” shared Justine. “The pieces are labeled ‘A’ or ‘B’ and you just put ‘A’ with ‘A’ and ‘B’ with ‘B’—it’s that easy.” One person put all the pieces together on the ground easily, but needed help to set it upright. Part of the fun of this product is how big the screen is (it is huge!) but that also means it is too big to set up or move alone.
You’ll need two people to get it all together. Set up was super fast. It took only five minutes to set up lying flat and less than 10 minutes all together to have it upright in place and staked down.
“It is a really huge screen,” added one of the neighbors. “Kind of feels like a drive-in movie.”
The screen is a ginormous 144 inches (12 feet diagonal).
It comes with tie-downs and you really need them. Best use is in a protected area. It is so big the wind will really move it if not tethered securely.
The screen quality was a full five, also the clips and the hefty stakes were of the highest quality. The set up and tear down was so easy that this big, outdoor movie screen scored high marks. The common sense labeling of the frame made it easy to use without reading directions. “Because the As and Bs were stickers, I wondered if they would stay labeled over time. If they fell off it would ruin some of the set up ease,” added Justine. The male-female tubing pieces were just a little tricky to “undo” after they were together. Even when there were wrinkles in the screen from unfolding, they pulled taut when assembled for a perfect movie screen.
“Nothing can really go wrong with this screen,” continued Justine. “I don’t see it malfunctioning or breaking.”
The only challenges to reliability are the wind and dark conditions—not an issue Camp Chef can control. Just be sure to use it in a protected area. The screen was set up in the afternoon for test run on equipment with a laptop and a projector. It was working, but in order to enjoy a movie they would need to wait past dusk for true dark. In a way, that does sound like a drive-in movie!
“If I were a business and could justify using this numerous times a year, I would probably give value-price a rating of five,” shared Justine. “But I’m kind of frugal and I don’t think I would spend over $350 for our own camping and backyard needs.” Suggested retail is $362.50. Then again, Justine is looking forward to using the Camp Chef Outdoor Big Screen when her husband returns from Afghanistan in the fall. They plan to invite friends over for college football games projected on the Outdoor Big Screen. When it comes to quality and reliability, we may have to offer an addendum on how the Camp Chef Outdoor Big Screen 144 handles both Michigan and Ohio State fans watching a game together.
Because it is incredibly easy to put up and take down and storage is awesome, the Outdoor Big Screen 144 gets full marks. “It stores into a fabric, zippered case about the size of a shotgun case,” added Justine. “And each piece of the frame has its own space to keep it all very organized.”
The Camp Chef Outdoor Big Screen 144 is a great addition to outdoor fun.
I will be honest, I think it is totally okay to “unplug” from movies and raise a family that enjoys sitting by the campfire and telling stories for entertainment. However, there is nothing wrong with an occasional movie night, even when camping. The versatility of the screen for other uses—like football games or business presentations—makes it worth the price.
