When turkey hunting in the spring, you always find yourself with birds that seem to constantly move around. Getting them to stand still can be a real challenge unless you’re using a product like the Best Turkey Decoy, which captures their attention long enough to allow you a shot.

However, the big question however is: when I get the turkey to stand still…where should I shoot him and what’s the best broadhead to use?

As a rule of thumb for where to shoot a turkey in a “feathers down position”, I like to use the beard line. In the image to the left you can see that if you draw a straight line from the top of the turkey’s beard, through his body, and out his back feathers, all his vitals rest above the line. For future reference on broadside or straight on shots, when you settle your pin on a gobbler never settle on a point any lower than the top of his beard.

If you find yourself in a situation needing to shoot a bird in “full strut”, then your settle point will slightly change. In full strut a turkey’s vitals will raise themselves to a higher level. In this position, never settle your pin any lower than the lowest point on the turkey’s waddle.

What is the best broadhead for killing turkeys?

Since turkeys are smaller animals, the majority of your shots will be at a downward angle. With this being said, you need a broadhead that can shatter through bone as well as swivel past the opposite leg, allowing for optimum blood loss. In the video below you will see how the Reign Broadhead shatters the back and rib bones on its way to the vitals. After penetrating the heart/lungs the Reign Broadhead then swivels around the opposite leg and causes the bird to bleed out almost immediately. Viewer discretion is advised.

Quality

Blowing through a 1,200 pound buffalo was no big deal for the Reign, turkeys don't stand a chance.

Reliability

Whether long or short shots, this broadhead continue to impress me.

Price/Value

A great price for a great product. Right now they have a $26 special on their site.

Referability

I've killed over 100 animals with the Reign broadheads and will shoot them until they are unavailable!
