Edge by Expedite Lucky Junior Decoy

As we get closer and closer to duck hunting in the middle portion of the country our thoughts keep turning to how best to bring ducks to our decoy spreads. Whether it is the set, or the number of decoys, one thing for sure is the use of motion decoys. Edge by Expedite offers the Lucky Junior as an entry level and inexpensive motorized rotating wing decoy that has some great features. The Lucky Junior is one of their many motion duck decoys including the Lucky Shot, Super Lucky series, Pro-Series Super Lucky Duck, and Rapid Flyer.
I provide this review as an opportunity for readers to see and understand more about the product that is not available online or in the store. In a sense, I open the box and look around to show you what you will get. Let’s take a look at the Lucky Junior. Additional photos are provided in a gallery below.
When I say entry level, I by no means infer this is anything other than a high quality product meant to bring ducks into your decoys. While some might argue all motion decoys are the same, that is not the case with this decoy as it is all about the wings and attention to quality that makes it worth considering. The Lucky Junior is available as a Mallard Drake or Teal. Both feature the uniquely designed aerodynamic wings that really do make sense. Rather than having a flat wing creating wind resistance, the Lucky Junior has the wings rolled somewhat to allow them to pass more easily through the air. This of course improves battery life, but also provides an excellent strobe effect.

The Lucky Junior is a complete product that only requires you to provide four AA batteries. A remote is available ($39.99). The design is new for 2012, and includes an endorsement by Phil Roberson. Included in the package is the fully molded and airbrushed body, a 42” three-piece stand, heavy duty painted plastic wings, orange feet and stand mounting bracket and hardware, two 4-cell 4.8v AA battery holders, and a protective pouch for the battery pack. Inexpensive replacement parts are available.
As I mentioned, the wings are indeed unique and are designed with a purpose. The body is very well molded with plenty of detail and color. The feet once they are attached will likely stay in place for the season. The motor is fuse protected and the switch is waterproof. One can appreciate the two battery packs making a quick change in the field easy with run times of over eight hours. The protective cover keeps the battery from possibly shorting out inside the Lucky Duck and keeps the batteries from falling out loosely inside the interior. The lid has a riveted hinge holding it in place. Finally, I want to promote the magnetic wing ports that do not require thumb screws to secure the wings.
Setup is simple using the three stand sections that secure with both pressure buttons and thumb screws. The wiring is ample enough to allow one to attach the battery, close the lid and secure with the elastic band, place the stand in the water and with the handles push it into the ground (an adapter is available to add 1/2″ conduit). The switch is easy to get to and once running, the Lucky Junior is quiet and has very little vibration. The Lucky Junior is also very lightweight and can easy be carried in to the field. Carry bags are available that will protect the paint and the head.
I highly recommend the Lucky Junior to those that have hunted for years with motion decoys or those considering their first motion decoy purchase. The price is right at $59.99.
