2014 Governor’s Cup: Congressman Welch and Governor Shumlin Display their “Fishing Skills” in an Angler’s Battle

The 7th Annual LCI Governor’s Cup is today and teams continue to gather for a chance at beating out peers and elected officials alike to take home the esteemed trophy. Governor Shumlin, Congressman Welch, Miss Vermont, Mayor Weinberger, and Fish & Wildlife Commissioner Porter are among the many participants looking to lead their teams to victory. With a roster full of defending champions of Governor’s Cups past as well as first-time teams of dedicated citizens, and local and national companies, this year’s event is chalking up to be a great competition despite its fun and informal demeanor.

The derby is held on the shore of the Winooski River in Colchester, VT at the Windemere Way Access Area, where it strives to highlight the importance of a healthy Lake Champlain and water resources while maintaining a friendly, yet competitive spirit. The proceeds of this good-natured, charity fishing derby benefit the Next Generation Fund and the Champlain Fisheries Recovery Initiative. The local convenience store group, Jolley, is graciously providing coffee, refreshments, and lunch to all participants during and following the event.

Fishing for the 2014 Governor’s Cup will begin at 10:00 a.m. and the awards will be given out at 11:15 a.m. on Wednesday, May 28th, 2014.
