So, what is KeyMod? For those that don’t know, a KeyMod is an alternative to the standard 1913 Picatinny quadrails that are near ubiquitous for the AR platform. The rail itself has a series of holes resembling keyholes (ergo the name) running the length of the rail, much like common home shelving systems.
What are the benefits of such a system? The number one benefit is modularity. The uniformity of the KeyMod system allows for total versatility for virtually all AR accessories. Additionally, the system allows a shooter to utilize only that piece of the rail that will carry accessories. The designers of this piece of equipment has ease of use in mind in that the screws do not separate from the nut. So equipment changes won’t require a surgeon’s precision whether you’re at home at a workbench or in the field. The keyholes are equidistant from one another which lends itself well to correct placement of accessories each time you take one off and then reattach it as your circumstances dictate.
Another advantage of the KeyMod is one that any shooter can relate to, which is rifle weight. The system allows Picatinney rail when and where a shooter needs it, but only there. This reduces weight and profile, both of which are of specific interest to shooters of all breeds, whether you’re a competitive shooter or in the service where weight is a concern.
