Video: The Moment When a Buck Breaks Through the Ice

The rut can make deer do stupid things, and when only a small frozen stream separates this buck from a group of does, he decided to take the plunge.
Deer are generally well equipped for a fall through the ice—but only up to a certain extent. Icy waters are still a source of mortality for deer, but more often than not the animals are smart enough to make short crossings and to stick to where the ice is the thickest.
Deer are also strong swimmers and plenty tough. Despite all that, however, sometimes an impatient buck can make fatal mistakes. Just two miles away another buck had the same idea and rushed into the river. Unlike the first, however, it found the water much deeper than expected.
