How To Make More Effective Deer Salt Licks
Ed Johnson 04.23.11
Putting out salt licks for deer is a must if you want to create a travel pattern and a healthy deer herd. Salt helps deer retain water during the hot summer months and ultimately helps keep the herd healthy. However, salt licks can be too strong for the deer if not diluted, and if you’re tying to conceal your prime hunting spot, salt blocks can be too white or obvious.
I recommend you buy 4 to 5 packages of green army tube socks. Then fill the socks with water softener salt, tie the top off with some small rope and hang from tree limbs over or near the deer trail. It also helps if you bring a bottle of water to soak the salt lick after it’s installed. Good luck with your deer hunting!
