Freezer Bag Cooking in the Back Country

There has never been a shortage of food on my ATV camping adventures and I enjoy eating a big breakfast and dinner. One of the great things about ATV camping is that you can easily carry a full-size camping stove and camping cookware. But sometimes I want something quick and easy to make and that is where freezer bag cooking has been a big help.

Whenever I am planning my ATV camping trips the camping meals is always a big part of it and over the last couple of years I have been planning more meals using freezer bag cooking. Most of my meals have been cooked up at home and frozen in ziploc bags. Then at the campsite I just drop the frozen meal (still in the ziploc bag) in a pot of boiling water.

Freezer bag cooking saves time and helps with the cleanup. I have also been experimenting with dehydrated vegetables, oatmeal and rice. You prepackage your quick meals in advance in quarter lb. size ziploc bags. At meal time, you simply pour boiling water directly into the ziploc bag, seal it up, and wait. After about ten minutes you open the bag and eat right out of it.

Since I am an early riser, I like to make up a bag of oatmeal and coffee before my morning hike. After my hike everyone else is usually up and making a big breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes or whatever. One thing about our ATV camping trips is you don’t go hungry, there is always plenty to eat.

For lunch I enjoy a bag of pre-seasoned brown rice and before adding the boiling water I will add a packet of ready-to-eat chicken or tuna. Cleanup is a breeze. A quick and easy hearty meal before hitting the trails again.

I found a great resource for freezer bag cooking over at TrailCooking.com where they have an ebook written by Sarah Svien called “Freezer Bag Cooking: Trail Food Made Simple“, a guide on how to prepare meals at home in a freezer bag, so you can simply add boiling water at camp for a delicious and satisfying meal.

On your next ATV camping adventure in the back country, a great supplement to your campsite gourmet cooked meals is freezer bag cooking for quick meals with minimal cleanup. If you like this post leave a comment and tell me what you think or Subscribe to my RSS feed and get loads more.
