Spring Mill Celebrates 50th Anniversary of Liberty Bell 7 flight

   07.21.11

MITCHELL – Spring Mill State Park is celebrating the 50th anniversary of astronaut Gus Grissom’s landmark space flight in the Liberty Bell 7 capsule, today through Saturday.

The three-day celebration includes events for all ages and interest levels. Free events include astronomy crafts and activities, star-gazing, a parade, and evening speakers and movie screenings.

Charlie Walker and Ken Bowersox, two Lawrence County astronauts, will speak at a luncheon on Friday. The noon luncheon costs $12 and will be at the Limestone Girls Club in Bedford.

At 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Spring Mill’s Grissom Memorial, visitors can sample food originally developed for astronauts. Test your knowledge of the early space program, and cool off from the summer heat by sending a bottle rocket soaring with pressurized water.

A full schedule of the events planned for the celebration is available at http://www.state.in.us/dnr/parklake/files/sp-Spring_LibertyBell-Details.pdf.

Park admission is $5 per vehicle for Indiana residents and $7 per vehicle for out-of-state residents.
