FORT LAUDERDALE, FL- Seaside communities along the US eastern seaboard, the Gulf of Mexico and throughout the Caribbean are taking note of the City of Clearwater’s innovative use of public space– a landmark mural created by celebrated marine artist Guy Harvey depicting an undersea scene filled with dolphins, sea turtles and manta rays.
The 44-by-24-foot, 3M vinyl wrap mural, recently approved by Clearwater’s Art and Design Board, is scheduled to be soon affixed to a curved metal sheet down the side of the newly opened Surf Style parking garage and swim shop, adjacent to the Hyatt Regency resort. Facing the beach, the mural, according to city officials, is sure to become one of the most identifiable landmarks on Clearwater Beach.
Dr. Harvey, perhaps best known for his colorful T-shirt design art and his tireless marine conservation efforts, thinks the outdoor use of his art is a good promotional marriage for coastal cities looking to promote one of their biggest assets and to remind visitors of the variety and abundance of marine life found just offshore.
Dr. Harvey’s iconic depictions of marlins, sharks, dolphins, kingfish, wahoo, sailfish, snook, groupers, rays, turtles and many other creatures of the oceans in their native habitat, have won hundreds of thousands of fans
around the world. In additional to original works of art in various mediums and illustrations for commercial products, Dr. Harvey has produced large indoor murals over the years, including the BassPro Outdoor World location in Dania Beach, Nova Southeastern University in Davie, the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and the Owen Roberts International Airport in Grand Cayman.
“Because of the advances in creating sustainable and durable acrylic murals for outdoor usage, we’re anticipating quite a bit of interest from other communities and businesses looking to make use of this signature and highly recognizable marine art in public places,” said Steve Stock, president of South Florida-based Guy Harvey, Inc.
