OutdoorHub 08.22.11
This past Saturday on August 20th the Cabela’s King Kat Tournament Trail hit the waters of Lake Barkley at the Prizer Point Marina & Resort near Cadiz, Kentucky. In the event where nearly 60 of the top anglers from 8 different states were competing not only for cash and prizes, but the opportunity to qualify for the 2011 Cabela’s King Kat Classic. This year’s Cabela’s King Kat Classic will be held on the Mississippi River at Burlington, Iowa October 27-28-29, 2011.
This was the first time the Cabela’s King Kat Trail had held an event on the waters of Lake Barkley and also the first time many of these out of state anglers had been on the water as well. After seeing what a great fishery Lake Barkley was many of the anglers noted they would look forward to returning sometime in the future.
Results for the Top 5 Teams
Taking first place was the Paragould, Arkansas team of Daryl and Jason Masingale with an impressive weight of 178.8 pounds and earned $2,500.00. Daryl and Jason also had big fish of the event with a 63.95 pound catfish which earned them an additional $500.00. The Monster Rod Holder, Tanglin with Catfish and American Pro Catters Prostaff team was fishing down lake nearly 20 miles using skipjack in 45-50 feet of water to catch 9 fish for the day. Each team is allowed to weigh in their 5 largest fish for the day. They also qualified for the $200 Monster Rod Holder bonus for winning the event and having at least 6 Monster Rod Holders on their boat. When asked if they anticipated weighing such an impressive weight, they mentioned while pre-fishing the previous weekend that the biggest fish they had found was in the 20 pound range. The 5 fish stringer they put together turns out to be the heaviest weight on the trail so far in 2011! The team expressed thanks to Cabela’s for supporting competitive catfishing and thanked all the companies that sponsor them.
In second place was the father and son team of Mike and John Runner of Bowling Green, Kentucky with a weight of 116.45 pounds and earning $1,200.00. Mike and John were fishing north of Cadiz near the Kentucky State Penitentiary using skipjack in 40-45 feet of water. The father and son team kept busy that day while catching 20 fish for the day.
Third place went to Jeff Dodd of Trenton, Tennessee and Kenny Bivens of Bells, Tennessee with a weight of 110.35 and earned $500.00. Jeff and Kenny started the day in Tennessee waters north of Dover and caught 2 fish over 34 inches as per the Tennessee State Catfish Trophy Law, then moved further north near Cadiz. They were using skipjack in 40-45 feet of water to catch over 20 fish for the day.
The Monster Rod Holder and American Procatter Pro Staff Team of James and Janet Fox of McArthur, Ohio took fourth place with a weight of 80.95 pounds earning $300.00. James and Janet were fishing south of Prizer Point using small skipjack in 40-50- feet of water to catch over 20 fish for the day. The team gave thanks to Monster Rod Holders and American Pro Catters for their support.
Fifth place went to Eric Barber of Big Rock, Tennessee and Kenneth Harris of Clarksville, Tennessee weighing in 68.75 pounds.
“We would like to thank Trigg County Tourism for sponsoring this event and Prizer Point Marina for hosting the tournament festivities, which also included a free kids fishing rodeo for kids 12 and under” said Tournament Director Tanner Tabor. All kids who participated will be entered in a drawing for 1 of (6) $2,000.00 college scholarships to be drawn at the classic in October. Being the first time hosting a catfish tournament, I didn’t know what to expect, but 178.8lbs will win 9 out of 10 tournaments, on what would be considered the best catfishing waters in the country! The capability to produce this kind of weight will certainly catch people’s attention, adding Lake Barkley to the list as a Trophy catfish destination.
