MISSOULA, Mont. – In a special election, the Outdoor Writers Association of America’s Board of Directors elected Jack Ballard to serve as treasurer of the association. Ballard fills a vacancy left by Paul Hansen, who was unable to fulfill his recent appointment.
A member since 1998, Ballard publishes magazine articles and photos pertaining to camping, cross-country skiing, canoeing, hiking, hunting, fishing, children’s conservation education and the natural history of wildlife. In the past ten years his articles and photos have appeared in more than 25 different regional and national magazines, and his photos have been published in numerous books, calendars and magazines. He holds two master’s degrees and is an accomplished public speaker, entertaining students, conference attendees and recreation/conservation groups with his compelling narratives. When not wandering the backcountry, he hangs his hat in Red Lodge, Mont.
Ballard served on OWAA’s Board of Directors from 2003-2006, earning the Outstanding Board Member award in 2006. He will serve a three-year term as treasurer ending June 2014.
“As treasurer, Ballard will bring a dedication and outspokenness to the financial workings of the organization,” said Robin Giner, OWAA executive director. “Jack represents the core of our membership: communicators who make their living from the outdoors. He will bring frugal values and creative insight to the post.”
In a letter provided to his electors – OWAA’s Board of Directors – Ballard wrote: “I realize that OWAA, like many nonprofits in the current economy, faces budgetary challenges. However, I believe the direction of the organization of the past few years demonstrates we have a solid, forward-thinking board of directors. I’m confident the organization can be kept on sound financial grounds and believe I can aid it in doing so as treasurer.”
