Springfield, Mo. September 15, 2011 — Academy Sports + Outdoors has renewed its partnership with National Hunting and Fishing Day (NHF Day) throughout 2011.
NHF Day takes place Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011. It occurs on the fourth Saturday in September every year.
Each year, NHF Day has an honorary chairperson that participates actively in promoting the historic day. Noted philanthropist and avid outdoorsman, T. Boone Pickens is serving as this year’s honorary chair.
Pickens is one of America’s most prominent and influential businessmen. When he is not behind a set of pointers chasing quail, he is a leading authority on world energy issues. Pickens is also president and CEO of the investment firm BP Capital Management and founder of Mesa Petroleum.
A strong advocate for alternative energy in the U.S., his renowned “Pickens Plan” is designed to decrease dependency on foreign oil while harnessing domestic energy alternatives such as wind power.
Academy Sports + Outdoors sponsorship will support the Wonders of Wildlife museum, which is the official home of National Hunting and Fishing Day. The Springfield, Mo., facility oversees educational initiatives to help the American public understand the indelible relationship between hunting, angling, healthy habitat, wildlife and fisheries conservation.
“Academy Sports + Outdoors is proud to support National Hunting and Fishing Day,” said Robert Frennea, executive vice president and general merchandise manager for Academy Sports + Outdoors. “Our company has a long history of active participation in conservation and we believe it’s important to continue to build awareness and encourage participation through a day dedicated to hunting and fishing.”
“The growing list of sponsors is an impressive example of dedication by our industry to call attention to the efforts that sportsmen bring to conserving our heritage,” said Misty Mitchell, Director of Conservation Programs Wonders of Wildlife. “With Academy Sports + Outdoors as a sponsor it also shows their full support of such a great purpose. We appreciate everything that they bring to the table.”
In 1972, Congress formalized NHF Day to remind the public that conservation depends on funding and leadership from hunters and anglers.
Sponsors for NHF Day 2011 continues to grow, and includes Wonders of Wildlife, NSSF, Bass Pro Shops, Smith & Wesson, Sportsman’s Channel, Realtree, Cabela’s, GunBroker.com, Yamaha, Academy Sports + Outdoors, Izaak Walton League of America, Pope and Young Club and Fresh Air Educators.
