Meetings to Gather Input on Arizona’s Elk and Pronghorn Hunts

Phoenix, AZ — The Arizona Game and Fish Department will host three public meetings in October to meet with constituents about developing the hunt recommendations for 2012 elk, pronghorn antelope, and population management hunts.

Three regions will provide details about elk and pronghorn antelope populations within their jurisdiction. Constituents interested in a particular Game Management Unit can attend the public meeting in that region to discuss the management direction.

“The meetings allow us to meet with sportsmen and other members of the public and discuss the direction for the recommendations based on survey data, harvest rates and the hunt guidelines, said Big Game Management Supervisor Amber Munig. “We won’t be proposing permit numbers at this point, but we will generally discuss where permit numbers might be headed. It’s a great way for people to stay informed and provide input into development of the recommendations.”

The public meetings will be hosted by wildlife biologists that are involved in the hunt recommendation process. Meeting dates and times are:

  • Thursday, Oct. 13, 6-8 p.m. – Kingman regional office, 5325 N. Stockton Hill Road.
  • Tuesday, Oct. 18, 6:30-8:30 p.m. – Pinetop regional office, 2878 E. White Mountain Blvd.
  • Wednesday, Oct. 19, 6-8 p.m. – Mesa regional office, 7200 E. University Drive.

One meeting was already held on Oct. 5 in Flagstaff.

The final proposed draft of the elk and pronghorn hunt recommendations will be made available for public review at six regional informational open houses in late November and December. More information on the open house dates will be distributed as it becomes available.
