Twenty adults and children have graduated from Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge’s first “Introduction to Archery” course. Refuge volunteers, under the leadership of Mike Santino, met at Forsythe every Sunday afternoon for 8 weeks to instruct the young archers and their families in the basics of archery. Mike, who has been a volunteer at Forsythe since 2006, attended the Service’s National Conservation Training Center’s “Archery as an Outreach Tool” in August 2011.
Many of the students indicated an interest in continuing to the next level as well as having a course in Exploring Bowhunting. Seven of the adult students stated that they were interested in becoming archery instructors to help with future classes. Everyone who completed the course received a certificate and an archery pin.
Archery is a lifetime sport anyone can enjoy, whether for target shooting or to build bowhunting skills. It’s also a great way for adults and children to get some exercise while spending time together outdoors. Forsythe NWR set aside a small area near its headquarters as an archery range.
