Five New Members Selected for Hatchery Research Advisory Committee in Oregon

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and Oregon State University announced today the appointment of five members to the Oregon Hatchery Research Center Advisory Committee.
Michael Brinkley of Eugene is a retired research director and will represent conservation interests. Brinkley is member of the McKenzie Fly Fishers, Long Tom Watershed Council, Sierra Club and several other organizations.
Ruth McDonald of Yachats is a middle school science teacher in Waldport and will represent K-12 education. Among her accomplishments, McDonald applied for and received a $300,000 grant to fund the participation of staff and students in a variety of OHRC activities.
Julie Collins of Portland, a long-time employee of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, has been selected to represent the federal government. Collins is currently assistant regional director of the Pacific Region Fisheries Program.
Norm Ritchie also of Portland will represent the public-at-large. Ritchie is a retired engineer and a long-time board member and past president of the Association of Northwest Steelheaders and the Save Our Wild Salmon Coalition.
Finally, Tom Ebert of Alsea will continue to represent science-at-large on the committee. Ebert has served on the committee since its inception in 2005. He is a retired population ecologist with primary interests in details of life histories and reproduction of organisms.
The 15-member committee advises the OHRC Senior Scientist on activities and functions related to the operation and maintenance of the OHRC. Committee members represent the federal government, local governments, conservation groups, sport fishing groups, the commercial fishing industry, tribes, resource producers (agriculture, timber and gravel), watershed councils and education. Two members represent the public-at-large and four represent the scientific community.
The OHRC is a cooperative research project between ODFW and OSU. The center’s mission is to develop an understanding of the mechanisms that may create differences between hatchery and wild fish, and devise ways to reduce and manage the differences so that hatcheries can be used responsibly in the conservation and management of Oregon’s native fish.
