Colorado’s Lathrop State Park Offers Memorial Day Programs

Lathrop State Park is offering three exciting programs over the Memorial Day Weekend:

Friday, May 25 at 8:15 p.m.:  Jon Sudar, a retired Grand Canyon National Park Interpretive Ranger and Walsenburg native will present a simplified geology program titled “Geology 00⅜”.   The program will identify the three basic rock types and their mineral components. The story continues on how these rocks arrived in Huerfano County and the landforms they eventually created.  The pictures in the program give you an idea where you can see the rocks and landforms as you travel in Lathrop State Park and roads in Huerfano County.  The program will be held at the Piñon Campground Amphitheater and lasts 45-50 minutes.

Saturday, May 26 at 7 p.m.: Musician and llama packer, Kent Greentree, will present: “2 ½ Months in the Colorado Rockies with Llamas.”  This slide show will follow Kent’s journey with his pack llamas along the 90 mile Rainbow Trail that follows the east side of the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range, and South to Cumbres Pass, near Chama, New Mexico.  The slide show will feature the photography and music of Kent Greentree. The program will be held at the Lathrop State Park Visitor Center.

Sunday, May 27 at 7 p.m.: Join local naturalist, Bob Kennemer, as he presents: “Rattle Snakes, No Bull!”  Bob will explain how to be “reptile aware” while active in Colorado’s snake country.  Kennemer will bring live bullsnakes, which will be used to teach participants how to tell the difference between the prairie rattler and the common bullsnake This program will focus on precautions one can take to avoid unwanted encounters with snakes  and how to treat a rattle snake bite.  The program will be held at the Piñon Campground Amphitheater.
