On May 23, Gary Connery became the first man to leap out of helicopter and land safely without the aid of a parachute.
Instead of a parachute, Connery used a specially designed “wingsuit” which helps extend the basic human form into something more like a flying squirrel.
During the 2,400 foot fall Connery reached speeds of up to 80 mph. He landed safely on a cardboard box landing strip that was over 350 feet long and 45 feet wide. It took volunteers six hours to construct the landing zone.
Connery is an ex-soldier and a Hollywood stuntman who has appeared in many films including Batman Begins, Die Another Day and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. He has completed over 450 BASE jumps and 880 sky dives.
After the jump Connery told the BBC, “Tonight will be all about celebrating with friends and family. Tomorrow I will be plotting my next daring challenge.”
Here is video of his amazing jump.
