Colorado Parks and Wildlife is inviting hikers to come celebrate National Trails Day on June 2with a hike to Castle Gulch.
Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area (AHRA) Naturalist Claire Davis and Volunteer Geologist Bob Hickey will lead the public on an easy hike to explore the enthralling scenery of Castle Gulch Trail, located eight miles east of Buena Vista off Highways 24/285. This is an easy hike with a round trip of approximately 4.2 miles from 9,400 feet to 10,000 feet. Special features of the hike include excellent views of the Sawatch Range, beautiful granite outcrops and a historical cabin/ranch homestead with a running stream and pond.
The hike will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at 1 p.m.
Hikers should meet at the large gravel pull-off at the Trout City model rail site east of Johnson Village, where County Road 307 departs to the south. Davis advises hikers to wear appropriate hiking boots or shoes, bring plenty of water, snacks and sunscreen, and dress accordingly for the weather. There is no charge for the hike and dogs must be on a leash. For more information contact AHRA at 719-539-7289.
