Cepeda Increases Points Lead in Monster MotoX in Guam

When I think of the south Pacific island of Guam, Championship Motocross isn’t what I picture. A few years ago something changed and motocross came to Guam. Monster Energy Guam Motocross Championships started a few years ago and is gaining popularity among the locals. Billed as a family friendly racing series, the motocross encourages villages to participate in the 12 round series.

Recently the village of Malojloj, Inarajan, hosted the Monster Energy Guam Motocross Championships. Local riders were tearing up the island’s dirt for round 7 of the 12 round series.

The latest event is dubbed the San Isidro Fiesta Motocross. The San Isidro course was short, tight, hot and dusty but the racing was extremely exciting. The race track was set up along the main highway, near the center of the village, and provided great views of the on track action. Although Race conditions were hot and dusty, volunteers and local sponsor Bobcat Guam worked tirelessly to suppress the dust. Guam Racing kicked off at 11am and saw intense race well into the afternoon.

The San Isidro Fiesta had a field of twelve riders packed tightly bar to bar first of two Open Motorcycle class heats. The short tight track provided some excitement as racers were bumping and shoving. Shawn Aguilo (#5) nailed the holeshot, but was quickly under pressure from other riders. Aguilo racing a Cycles Plus Kawasaki, led the first half of the lap before Tim Wenden (#31) riding a Honda pulled into the lead. Wenden held the lead for several laps before being passed by Anthony Ignacio (#915 ) and series points leader, JR Cepeda (#42). Heat one was won by Anthony Ignacio (Yam) with JR Cepeda taking the second. Aguilo was able to hold on to third.

In heat two it was Aguilo was leading again early but was quickly passed by Cepeda for the lead. Within a few laps Ignacio was also past Aguilo and putting the pressure on Cepeda for the lead. The two youngsters put on a great battle for the lead with Cepeda taking the win and Ignacio taking the runner up position.

Cepeda won round 7 and extended his championship points lead to 17 points over Caleb Barretto (#59). Ignacio took second and Caleb Barretto placing third.

The Guam Monster Energy Series has several classes including Kids Mini-bike, Kids Mini-ATV, and Open ATV and emphasizes family racing.

Up next will be round 8 of the 12 round Monster Energy Guam Motocross Championships at the Guam International Raceway this Sunday, June 3. Racing starts at 1pm and is free to come out and watch!
