GNCC Comes Back to Where it All Began with Inaugural Mountaineer Run

This past weekend had Round 7 of the Can-Am Grand National Cross Country return to its roots with the inaugural Mountaineer Run in Masontown, West Virginia.

Nearly 40 years and only 50 miles away, “Big Dave” Coombs began “The Blackwater 100” in Davis, West Virginia. The Blackwater was billed as the “toughest motorcycle race” in America. The 100 stood for 100 miles of racing.  By all accounts it was a torture test for man as well as machine. This weekend wasn’t much different.

With record spring temperatures, the Mountaineer was a tough event for man and machine during the two hour race. The race course lived up to its heritage of toughness with a rocky, technical “old school” circuit.  The XC1 class began with an exciting 6 man battle for the title of king of the mountain.  After a few laps it became clear that it was only a 3 man race for the top spot on the podium.  Battling for the win were Taylor Kiser, teammate Walker Fowler and points leader Chris Borich

Taylor Kiser managed to keep Chris Borich at bay for most of the race surrendering the lead just prior to the start of the final lap. Once again, Maxxis/Yoshimura’s Chris Borich beat out the Ballance Racing Yamaha’s dynamic duo of Taylor Kiser and Walker Fowler to notch his sixth win in seven races, and padding his sizeable series points lead. This season, it seems that there is no one who can keep Borich from stealing the win late in the race.

In the XC2 Pro Am class, Patrick McGuire takes the event adding win number 2 for the season. McGuire’s consistent riding keeps him at the top of the points for season.

Adam McGill (HON) scored the Holeshot award for the XC1’s and Patrick McGuire (YAM) picking it up for the XC2s.
