Five Western Colorado State Parks Implement Stage II Fire Bans

Stage II fire bans, issued by five western Colorado counties, have been implemented at Crawford, Navajo, Paonia, Ridgway and Sweitzer Lake State Parks. The Stage II fire restrictions, issued by Archuleta, Delta, Gunnison, Montrose and Ouray counties, prohibit wood or charcoal fires and limit cigarette smoking to inside vehicles or RVs. Compressed gas fires with an off switch are still allowed. Use of fireworks is always prohibited at Colorado State Parks.

“We hope everyone understands just how bad the fire danger is and recognizes the necessity of the fire bans,” said Kurt Mill, Northwest Regional Co-Manager for Colorado Parks and Wildlife. “We will be strictly enforcing these county fire bans at state parks.”

With the fire danger high across the state, new fire bans are possible. Mill recommended that anyone who is planning a cookout or camp fire at a state park call ahead or check the park web site to learn about fire restrictions that may be in place.
