National Guard FLW College Fishing Northern Conference Headed To Lake Champlain

National Guard FLW College Fishing is headed to Lake Champlain July 21 for the second of four stops in the Northern Conference. Forty college teams will be competing for a top award of $5,000 and a berth in the Northern Conference Championship tournament.
“It’s going to be the standard summer patterns,” said Snapple pro Jacob Powroznik of Prince George, Va., who is fresh off a second place finish at the Lake Champlain FLW Tour event. “A lot of anglers will be catching both smallmouth and largemouth, and I think you’ll see a lot of mixed bags coming in. The main key for a lot of the college anglers will be who can find that big largemouth bite. A lot of people will be catching them on a frog. The topwater bite will be hot. A lot of people will catch them cranking. For smallmouth, I’d be dropshotting and throwing a tube. There’s a lot of fish up there, and they’ll bite almost anything.”
When asked for advice specifically for the college anglers who may not have much experience on this huge body of water, the Kellogg’s Angler of the Year runner-up recommended a word many college students dread – homework.
“Just do your homework before you get out there,” Powroznik said. “Look at a map. Every bay that you go into there will be a concentration of fish. You’re going to have to work to find them. But when you do, man is it fun. I’d estimate that it’s going to take a team 18½ pounds to win this tournament.”
Anglers will take off from the Dock Street Landing located at 5 Dock Street in Plattsburgh, N.Y., at 6:30 a.m. Saturday. Weigh-in will be held at the take off site beginning at 12:30 p.m. Takeoff and weigh-in are free and open to the public.
