The MGOYA participants will have an opportunity to have their photos published in a calendar for the San Pedro/Long Beach CA community. Their photos will be on exhibit at The Port of Los Angeles.

The GoPro camera grant, GoPro fiscal sponsorship and support from the Outdoor Industry & the Natural Food Industry will allow continuing collaboration with the Los Angeles Police Department and Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) San Pedro High School. “GoPro awards its “get youth into the outdoors” 2008-2009 camera grant to MGOYA (Medicines Global Outdoor Youth Ambassador) programs. We reviewed dozens of youth programs in order to support a non-profit that creatively gets youth involved in the outdoors. Medicines Global is teaching young people & adventure travelers to become compassionate citizens of the world.”       ~ Nicholas Woodman, President,  GoPro.

MG Outdoor Youth Ambassadors will encourage, educate & inspire their fellow students to experience wilderness activities and other creative activities. Medicines Global has the support of the principal, magnet coordinator, many teachers and the encouragement of Los Angeles Mayor Villaraigosa. Programs in place will serve as a model for expanding programs locally & nationally. All programs have a strong creative component focusing on photography.
“Getting our students out of the city and into nature is of the utmost importance. I cannot imagine a more exciting means of doing this then the programs Medicines Global has designed”
~ Cynthia Deinstein,  L.A.P.D. &  Magnet Officer, San Pedro High School.

With funding in place, Medicines Global hopes to embark on their 12th year Anniversary Expedition to Nepal in November. Two MG Outdoor Youth Ambassadors will be selected to join the Expedition. While in Nepal, the students will work with Medicines Global to distribute medical supplies to Kathmandu area hospitals and to health posts along the Annapurna Trail. The students will also learn about the local culture and team up with 2 Nepalese students from Kathmandu who will join the Medicines Global Annapurna trekking & Rx delivery expedition.
Since its inception, MGOYA has provided more than 900 urban youths with outdoor adventures. The 2008-2009 GoPro camera grant helped to continue the program through 2012. The current grant will help facilitate the continuation of MGOYA’s dynamic programs.
