Hunter Education Provides Benefits for a Lifetime in Arkansas

Don’t get caught up in the last minute rush. With hunting seasons approaching, outdoors people, young and not so young, around the state are urged to sign up for hunting education classes to get acquainted with the skills, regulations and responsibilities that every hunter needs to know.

If you were born after Dec.31, 1968, you are required to be hunter education certified to hunt large game and small game, upland game and waterfowl. This certification can come from any state, not just Arkansas.

Proof of hunter ed certification has to be carried on the person hunting.

Even if a person is old enough to not require hunter education certification, they will likely benefit from taking the course, especially with a child.

Three methods of hunter education are offered by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.

Instructor-Led Classes

The preferred hunter education method is through a 10-hour instructor-led classroom and hands-on demonstration. Classes may be a few hours a night for three to four nights or a full Saturday class. The final class will end with a test to pass the course. Interested students may call 800-482-5795 to find a course in their area or go to http://www.agfc.com/education/Pages/EducationHunterClasses.aspx to find a class.

Online Self-Study Course

Students may visit the online study course site and complete each section of the course online. The third party that provides the online course will charge $19.50. Students must take a supervised final examination at an official testing site to complete the course.

CD Self-Study Course

A free self-study course on CD also is available. Call 501-223-6351 or 800-482-5795, or send an email with your name and mailing address to acopeland@agfc.state.ar.us and request a CD be mailed. The course is taken at home at the student’s leisure, but students must take a supervised final examination at an official testing site to complete the course.
