South Dakota GFP Mountain Lion Meeting to be Held August 7

The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department will host an open house in Rapid City on Tuesday, Aug. 7, to gather public input on mountain lion management issues and the recent proposal for the 2013 mountain lion hunting season.

The meeting will be held from 6-9 p.m. MDT at the Outdoor Campus-West.

The public will be invited to join small group discussions with GFP staffers throughout the meeting room. Staffers will share the latest information on lion population estimates and the harvest projections anticipated under the 2012-2013 mountain lion hunting season proposal by the Game, Fish and Parks Commission at its regular meeting last week.

Individuals will be invited to stay for the entire three-hour meeting, but may come and go at any time during the evening to fit personal schedules. GFP staffers will encourage attendees to share their thoughts in writing on the season proposal. Those written comments will be provided to all GFP Commissioners as part of the official public comment on the season proposal.

In addition to the open house, testimony on the proposed lion season may be emailed to GFP at wildinfo@state.sd.us or mailed to: GFP Commission, 523 East Capitol Ave., Pierre, SD 57501. All correspondence must include the sender’s name and address to be included in the public record.

The mountain lion season proposal may be viewed online at http://gfp.sd.gov/agency/commission/default.aspx.
