In NASCAR, it’s called the Sprint Cup Series, the overall points leader given the title of champion. More often than not, too, the crown is captured during the season’s final race. Equally as often, the champion is determined while another foe takes the day’s checkered flag. The race winner gets a share of the attention, but the intense limelight shines on the season champion.
Similar circumstances surrounded the final National Guard FLW Walleye Tour event recently at Escanaba, Mich., on Lake Michigan. Before the field was culled to the top 10 on the final day, the LUND Boats and Mercury Marine pro Chad Schilling – who had just made the cut – realized, mathematically, he had already earned Angler of the Year.
Making the top 10 was exciting enough for Schilling, but when it was announced that he had officially won the Angler of the Year title he became speechless. “I’m numb. My body is numb. It’s like I am in one of those dreams you can’t wake up from,” said Schilling to an FLW Walleye Tour reporter. “I am the luckiest guy on the planet; I have a fantastic wife, wonderful kids and great support from family and friends.”
“Last year seemed incredible to me, but this year just keeps on getting better.” Chad won the 2011 AIM Championship and a 2012 LUND 2075 Pro V. “I still don’t know how to swallow this. But now I guess this means I have to get the next one, because the best one is the next one,” Schilling said with a smile.
Lund Marketing Manager Tony Kolker said this about Schilling’s victory, as well as the character of the man. “Chad is one of those guys who just loves to fish – period. His attitude, on and off the water, exemplifies professionalism and is a true asset to the industry. We’re proud to have Chad bearing the LUND logo and to represent the company.”
Along with the Angler of the Year trophy, the Akaska, S.D., resident received $10,000 from FLW and another $10,000 from LUND Boat contingency dollars. He also receives an automatic berth in the 2013 National Guard FLW Walleye Tour Championship.
With Schilling at the helm, LUND Boats is proud to be part of another major tournament success.
