NSSF Welcomes Former ATF Official to Compliance Consulting Team

Harry McCabe, former deputy assistant director with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), has joined the National Shooting Sports Foundation’s firearms retailer in-store compliance consulting team.

Now retired from the bureau, McCabe spent 36 years with ATF. He most recently was deputy assistant director of field operations and responsible for the entire firearms regulatory policy and inspection program nationwide. In this new consulting position, McCabe will visit NSSF member firearms retailers to review their layouts, procedures and documentation and then make recommendations on how to improve their system of compliance to minimize the possibility of any violations should they be inspected by ATF.

“NSSF is extremely pleased to have Harry McCabe join its retailer compliance advisory team,” said Patrick Shay, director of retail development for NSSF, the trade association of the firearms and ammunition industry. “His experience and expertise in this field will benefit any retailer who utilizes this valuable member service.”

In addition to working for ATF in North Carolina, South Carolina and Detroit, McCabe spent 12 years directing all firearms inspection activities in Tennessee and Alabama, overseeing more than 5,000 firearms qualification and compliance inspections and conducting approximately 50 firearms industry educational seminars. He retired from the bureau in June.

NSSF has expanded its popular retailer compliance program so that more federal firearms licensees can take advantage of expert advice and avoid warning conferences, warning letters, fines, license revocations or license non-renewals that often are due to oversights and human errors involving paperwork and inventory and not staying abreast of new regulations.
