Colorado PWC to Meet in Durango

The Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission will receive an update on research involving black bears and cutthroat trout when the Commission meets in Durango Oct. 4 and 5.

The meeting will be held at The Strater Hotel, 699 Main Avenue in Durango. The Commission agenda begins Thursday, Oct. 4 at 8:30 a.m. The Thursday agenda includes general updates on agency strategic priorities and a financial update.

Thursday briefings from Colorado Parks and Wildlife staff will include an overview of ungulate population management plans. Commissioners will also receive a briefing on black bear research taking place in the Durango area. Lead researcher Heather Johnson will provide an update on her work studying factors driving human-bear conflict and testing management strategies to reduce them. Jeff Ver Steeg, Assistant Director for Research, Policy and Planning, will provide Commissioners with an update on cutthroat trout genetic work recently published by teams from the University of Colorado. Thursday afternoon Commissioners will receive a tour of Lake Nighthorse and the Colorado Parks and Wildlife regional office in Durango.

Friday’s short agenda will begin at 8:30 a.m. with updates from the Colorado Parks and Wildlife regional managers. The Commission will then consider an executive session for discussion of pending litigation and real estate negotiations. The meeting is scheduled to adjourn at 10 a.m.

The Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission meets monthly and travels to communities around the state to facilitate public participation in its processes. The commission is scheduled to travel to Yuma and Colorado Springs during the remainder of 2012. The meeting schedule for 2013 will be finalized by the Commission soon and will be posted online.
