Colorado’s Barr Lake State Park Hosts Walk on the Wild Side

Enjoy a fall morning strolling along a shimmering lake in the prairie during Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory’s Walk on the Wild Side walkathon on Saturday, Oct. 6.

The event kicks off at RMBO’s Old Stone House Environmental Learning Center at Barr Lake State Park near Brighton. Individuals or teams are welcome in any of three walks:

  • 8 a.m.: 10K loop includes a visit to RMBO’s bird banding station
  • 9 a.m.: 5K loop crosses the dam at Barr Lake
  • 10 a.m.: 1K prairie trail, ideal for families with small children

All walks include healthy snacks, water and activities by Colorado Parks & Wildlife and RMBO. Each walker will receive a water bottle donated by REI and a T-shirt from The Walking Company, National Partner of Walk on the Wild Side.

Entry fees are $5 for children age 12 and under, $15 for individuals over 12 and $15 per person for people participating as a team. Pledges and donations are welcome from those unable to participate in the walkathon. Register, donate or find information at http://walk.birdday.org/rmbo, or call 303-659-4348 ext. 16. All proceeds will benefit RMBO’s environmental education programs.

Education Director Kacie Miller believes a healthy community requires healthy people and a healthy environment. “This fun event gives community members an opportunity to get some exercise while learning about conservation and supporting environmental education,” Miller said.

RMBO’s Old Stone House is at 14500 Lark Bunting Lane through the north entrance to Barr Lake State Park off Bromley Lane, just east of I-76 in Brighton.

Founded in 1988, Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory is a Colorado-based non-profit that works to conserve birds and their habitats from Montana to Mexico through science, education and stewardship.
