Oregon DFW to Release Large Trout in Alton Baker Canoe Canal

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will release 1,550 large trout into the Alton Baker Canoe Canal on Friday.

The release will take place at several places along the two-mile canal, located within Alton Baker Park in Eugene.

The release will consist of 1,000 one-pound rainbow trout raised at ODFW’s Leaburg Fish Hatchery, plus an additional 550 trout in the 12- to 14-inch class from Desert Springs Trout Farm.

“These are big, beautiful fish and should be a lot of fun to catch,” said Kelly Reis, ODFW fish biologist in Springfield. “We encourage everybody to come out and take advantage of this opportunity.”

Alton Baker Park is located on the north bank of the Willamette River just east of the Ferry Street Bridge and Coburg Road. It is accessible by foot or bike from either side of the river via the River Bank Trails. By car the park can be accessed via the Club Road underpass off Coburg Road or from Autzen Stadium off MLK/Centennial.
