Utah Offers Free Mule Deer Viewing Event

If winter arrives, you could see as many as 100 mule deer at a Dec. 8 viewing event near Price.

The Division of Wildlife Resources is sponsoring the free mule deer watch from 3 – 6 p.m. that day.

If you’d like to participate, call Brent Stettler at (435) 613-3707 to let him know you’re interested.

Stettler says persistent warm weather has kept deer at higher elevations. “If the deer haven’t moved down to the winter range by Dec. 8, I’ll notify you,” says Stettler, regional conservation outreach manager for the DWR.

If deer haven’t arrived on the winter range by Dec. 8, Stettler might choose a different location to hold the event. “Or we might have to cancel the event,” he says.

If winter conditions arrive before Dec. 8, the event will move forward as planned:

  • Participants will meet at the DWR office in Price at 3 p.m. The office is at 319 N. Carbonville Rd.
  • From there, the group will caravan to the Porphyry Bench winter range. It takes about 15 minutes to drive to the range from Price.
  • Plan on driving your own vehicle so you can view and photograph the deer at your leisure. Four-wheel drive trucks are recommended.
  • The DWR will provide one large 4×4 passenger vehicle for those who don’t have off-road transportation. Event will end at dark.
