New ‘Outdoor Journal’ Season April 16 on VPT

Creatures great and small, young and adult — humans included — appear throughout the 11th season of Vermont Public Television’s “Outdoor Journal.”  Launching six new weekly magazine-style programs on Tuesday, April 16, at 7:30 p.m., the series sticks to its roots in hunting, fishing and conservation while adding new outdoor experiences to the mix.

Programs will re-air Saturdays at 10 a.m. and will be available on demand at vpt.org/outdoorjournal.

Outdoorsman and writer Lawrence Pyne returns as host, and correspondent Gina Bullard makes her debut in paddleboarding, zip lining and ice climbing adventures.

Several stories feature projects that teach youngsters and families to fish and hunt.  In the April 16 season opener, teens learn fly-fishing at Trout Unlimited MadDog chapter’s camp at Quimby Country in Averill, Vt.  A story from Burlington shows baby spiny softshell turtles being nurtured, then released into Lake Champlain.  Gina Bullard tries stand-up paddleboarding.  A visit to Steam Mill Brook Wildlife Management Area in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom shows what’s available for recreation in its 10,800 acres.

In other programs, biologists track black bears to learn the impacts of a proposed wind project, and anglers bring their fish to popular weigh stations during the LCI Father’s Day Derby.  Host Lawrence Pyne’s outings include a turkey hunt with outdoorswoman Wendy Butler of New Haven, Vt., and wing shooting at the Orvis School.

A Wildlife Management Area is showcased in each program, including the new Turner Hill area, which includes the homestead of Daisy Turner.

“VPT’s Outdoor Journal” is intended to foster appreciation and respect for the environment and working landscape.  Major production funding is provided by the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Sport Fish and Wildlife Restoration Program. Additional funding is provided by Remo and Peter Pizzagalli.
