Georgia School Wins Second National Title at National Archery Tournament

Two Georgia archery school teams were on the winner’s podium at the 2013 National Archery in the Schools Program National Tournament over Mother’s Day weekend, with one school bringing home its second national championship.

Woodlawn Elementary in Chatsworth captured the elementary division national title for the second time in three years with a score of 3,300, the highest elementary division score ever posted at the national tournament. Bay Creek Elementary of Loganville took third place in the nation with a score of 3,243, making Georgia home to two of the top three elementary school archery squads in the country.

More than 100 top qualifying elementary schools in the nation competed May 9-11 at the Louisville Exposition Center, joining more than 400 total teams in elementary, middle and high schools from 38 states. In all, over 9,400 student archers participated in the 2013 NASP National Tournament.

North Murray High School in Chatsworth was the third highest scoring Georgia team with a 3,234, placing 66th out of more than 150 competing high school teams. Morgan County Middle School in Madison shot a team score of 3,131 to finish 71st nationally out of more than 150 middle schools.

Woodlawn Elementary 6th grader Braxton Bates and Bulloch Academy (Statesboro) 7th grader Joseph Lomax each arrowed a 288 to lead Georgia’s student archers. Bates finished fourth overall in the elementary male division and was ranked 85th in the nation. Lomax placed 19th in the middle school male division and 89th in the country out of more than 5,300 male shooters.

Bagley Middle School’s Haley Bagley of Chatsworth was the top Georgia female with a score of 286. Bagley, an 8th grader, placed 10th in the female middle school division and was ranked 42nd in the national among more than 4,000 female archers.

Students from 16 schools and a total of 292 archers from Georgia competed at the 2013 NASP National Tournament. A total of 14 Georgia school teams qualified at nationals to participate in the World Championships June 28-30 at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, Missouri.

A “team” consists of 16 to 24 shooters with at least five members of the opposite gender. Archery teams that competed in the National Tournament had to post a qualifying score at the Georgia-NASP State Tournament held in March at the Georgia National Fairgrounds in Perry.
