Mathews Archers Shine in First World Cup Event of 2013

After a strong ending to the 2012 World Cup series, Team Mathews shooters picked up the 2013 season right where they left off. Braden Gellenthien’s dominating win over the world’s top target shooters at the World Cup Final in Tokyo in September of 2012 was a tribute to his terrific season last year. May 13, 2013 twenty-two countries sent their top men’s compound athletes to Shanghai, China for Stage 1 of this year’s World Cup. The event consisted of a 72 arrow qualification round, Team round (each country’s best 3 archers), Mixed Team Round (each country’s best male and female archer) and of course, the Individual match-play event.

During the qualification round, Mathews Pro Staff members led wire-to-wire with Martin Damsbo (DEN) and his Apex 8 leading the pack. Adam Ravenscroft (GBR), shooting an MR 7, tied Martin on raw score but had just one fewer X, which was good for second place. One point behind them was Braden Gellenthien (USA), shooting an Apex 7, who wrapped up the third place spot. Braden went on to lead the USA men’s team to gold in the finals against Italy and also the mixed team to gold against Korea.

After navigating their way through the dangerous field, Braden and Martin found themselves squaring off for Mathews only Gold Medal Match. With it, the coveted points towards the World Cup Final to be held in Paris later this year. After fantastic shooting in the first two ends, the pair found themselves deadlocked 59-59. Braden then pulled away with back to back 30s, and finished the match with a very strong 148/150.

Braden commented: “I knew I stumbled onto something great with the Apex 7 and I’m just now realizing its full potential. Since switching to it, I’ve managed two second place finishes, a fourth, and now a major win. The Apex 7’s speed, consistency, and forgiveness make it a force to be reckoned with and I’m very excited to finish the season with this bow in my hand!”

Braden’s biggest piece of advice to an archer new to the Apex 7, like himself, is, “make sure that you shoot a stiffer arrow than you’d normally shoot. With the Apex 7, I’ve found I need to use a 420 spine pro tour instead of the standard 470 that I’d normally use at 28.5” and 57 lbs.”

The next World Cup, Stage 2 is scheduled for Antalya, Turkey June 10-16, 2013.
