Firefighters arrived at a Gold Canyon, Arizona home to witness a bizarre brawl. It seemed that a squirrel and gopher snake were fighting it out on a patio chair, and it was definitely a one-sided battle for the out-classed reptile.
“I’d say this round went to the ground squirrel, but I’m sure there will be a rematch in the future,” firefighter Ryan Philips told CBS5.
Phillips, who had filmed the encounter, said it was an odd reversal since squirrels are usually prey for the snakes. He believed that there was a squirrel nest in the area, which explained for the animal’s ferocity. The snake had tangled itself in the chair in order to anchor itself for strikes from its fangs, but that was not enough to deter this overprotective parent. Several times, the squirrel darted in to gnaw on the snake like an ear of corn before retreating. The firefighters eventually broke up the fight and released the snake, which suffered a few gashes in its side, back into the desert.
