Carry Alerts: The GPS App for the Cautious Gun Owner
OutdoorHub Reporters 07.16.13
Gun owners who practice concealed carry now have a new resource that could alert them before they enter “gun free zones.” An iPhone app designed by Ben Harrell called Carry Alerts allows users to search for gun free zones such as schools, sports arenas, public parks, federal buildings, and even wider-reaching local, state, and federal boundaries.
By using the app’s map and GPS monitoring capability, gun owners can safely prepare for trips ahead of time. The app also helpfully notifies the user before he or she crosses into one of these gun free zones, saving the carrier hassle and potentially avoiding legal snares.
Still in version 1.0, the app is only available on iPhone and iPad devices, although an Android version could be in the works. Currently it lacks the capability for users to update the database, but a custom alert feature is being developed. So far, customer ratings have averaged a maximum five-out-of-five stars rating on the iPhone app shop and reviews have been unanimously positive. The app can be purchased for a one-time fee of $2.99 and works only within North America.
Last week, OutdoorHub reported on an app called Gun Geo Marker that allowed users to mark down the locations of “dangerous” guns and gun owners. The app has received heavy criticism because of its potential for abuse, and many are calling it an intrusion of privacy. The app has since received over 2,800 negative reviews and holds a 1.1-star rating in the Google Play store.
